Dongdaemun Chicken Restaurant 'Myeongdong Chicken Hanmari Geoseong Store'

It's a restaurant that doesn't go well now for one reason or another, but there was a restaurant called “Chicken Hanmari” in Sinwol-dong close to my house.

It's been a long time since I first visited, so I can't remember exactly. There, I tried a dish called chicken for the first time.

There was also a reason there wasn't a restaurant nearby where you could eat and drink, but I had a cup of soju with hot soup and meat

It was a great meal, so I often went out to eat it with my friends. I was wondering if this restaurant was the only food called “chicken,” or if this kind of food originally existed, so I found out that it originated on the Dongdaemun side, and there was also an alley where only chicken houses were gathered.

It is said that Jin Ok Hwa Halmae Chicken Hanmari, which first used the name “Chicken Han Mari,” opened in 1978. At that time, there was Dongdaemun Express Terminal nearby, and the area around Dongdaemun is a large market that has existed since the Joseon Dynasty. It was originally a restaurant that served chicken mizutaki, but merchants who were pressed for time while doing business and customers who needed to schedule tea time said, “Here's a chicken!” It is said that placing an order in a hurry became the name of the restaurant and the name of the food.

In addition to Dongdaemun Chicken Alley, there are several chicken houses near Dongdaemun and on the Chungmuro side. The style is slightly different from house to house, but what they have in common is that a large spoon contains a whole chicken with broth, cuts the chicken directly from the spoon with scissors, and after eating all the meat, the kishimen noodles are rolled up and eaten. Depending on your preferences, you can add condiments such as kimchi, garlic, and pepper to cook in whatever style you like.

Chicken is still an unknown food in the provinces, but now it has increased a lot differently than before, and it has become a well-known food in Seoul, where it has sprung up in several places in the neighborhood. I tried it all over the place, and the basic style was similar, but I still like the meat and broth better than the new houses on the outskirts of Dongdaemun Alley. You can also enjoy the hall full of people and the bustling and vibrant atmosphere of the market restaurant.

When I visited before, the house that had a sign saying Geosung Chicken Hanmari has now been changed to Myeongdong Chicken Hanmari Geoseong Branch. However, when I saw the boss's face, he was the same person as before. When I asked, the boss said he was the younger brother of a chicken from Myeongdong. Myeongdong, Shijo, and Geoseong chickens in that alley were family members, so they changed their old name and seemed to brand Myeongdong Chicken. On the business card with the new logo of Myeongdong Chicken, it said Main Branch, Shijo Branch, and Geoseong Branch. The taste is the same as before. I went out to eat a full bowl of kishimen noodles with soju.
